About UltraLive

UltraLive is a free website for following ultramarathons live. While a race is on it shows the results, the leaderboard and analysis of how the race is going, and afterwards it keeps the results.

Who runs UltraLive

UltraLive is built and run by Daniel Westergren at ultramarathon.se, a Swedish website about ultrarunning. It covers races in Sweden and abroad, from Swedish 24-hour races to world championships and Spartathlon.

Which races it covers

UltraLive follows three kinds of ultramarathon:

  • Fixed-time races of 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours and 6 days, where the runner who covers the longest distance wins. They are usually run on a short loop or a track.
  • Fixed-distance races such as 50 km, 100 km and 100 miles, where the fastest time wins.
  • Point-to-point races like Spartathlon, 246 km from Athens to Sparta, timed at checkpoints along the course.

What you can see

  • A live leaderboard with every runner's distance, laps and pace, and their place in their gender.
  • Projections: the distance a runner is on course for in a fixed-time race, and the expected finish time in a distance race.
  • Splits at every timing point, and the standings as they were at any of them.
  • Charts of distance, pace and the gaps between runners over the race.
  • In point-to-point races: the time at each checkpoint, the margin to the cut-offs and estimated arrival times.
  • Team standings by country at championships.
  • Records & standards: which records and qualification standards could fall, and who is on pace for them.
  • Runner profiles with their earlier results and personal bests from the DUV ultramarathon statistics.

Where the data comes from

The times come from each race's official timing system, such as MyLaps, RaceResult or Ultimate, or from the organiser's checkpoint feed. UltraLive reads them during the race and calculates places, projections and charts from them. Runners' earlier results come from the DUV ultramarathon statistics. The official results are always the organiser's.

Free, with no account

Following races on UltraLive is free. There is no sign-up and no app to install, though you can add the site to your home screen. Your settings and the runners you star are saved only in your own browser.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I follow Spartathlon live?

On UltraLive. During Spartathlon it shows every runner's time at each checkpoint on the 246 km course from Athens to Sparta, with the standings, the gaps, the margin to each cut-off and estimated finish times. Open it from the Live tab on the home page or from the list of all races.

What does #19 next to a runner mean?

It is the runner's place in their gender: #19 means 19th woman or 19th man, not 19th overall.

How often are the results updated?

While a race is on, UltraLive reads the official timing every 10 to 60 seconds, depending on the race, and the page updates by itself. A new time appears once the timing system has recorded it: at the timing mat in a lap race, or at the checkpoint in a race like Spartathlon.

What is a 24-hour race?

A fixed-time ultramarathon: runners cover as much distance as they can in 24 hours, usually on a loop of one or two kilometres or on a 400 m track, and the longest distance wins. 6-hour, 12-hour, 48-hour and 6-day races work the same way. UltraLive shows each runner's distance, laps and pace, and the distance they are on course for at the finish.

Can I follow a specific runner?

Yes. Tap the star next to a runner's name to follow them. The runners you star are saved on this device only, in your browser, so no account is needed and nothing is shared.

Is UltraLive free?

Yes. Following races on UltraLive is free, with no account, no sign-up and no app to install.

Where do the results come from?

From each race's official timing system, such as MyLaps, RaceResult or Ultimate, or from the organiser's checkpoint feed. Runners' earlier results come from the DUV ultramarathon statistics. The official results are always the organiser's.

How do I get my race on UltraLive?

Email Daniel Westergren at daniel@ultramarathon.se with the name of the race, its date and which timing system it uses. UltraLive works with MyLaps, RaceResult and Ultimate timing.
